WHAT ARE CAPRESE SKEWERS?

At the core of it, caprese salad skewers are made of tomatoes, basil leaves, and mozzarella balls. The touch of balsamic and olive oil enhances these flavors and gives the skewers the perfect mediterranean bite! Wanting to add a little extra? Fold up slices of prosciutto onto the skewer and a kalamata olive.

The American language has us botching this beautiful translation. Here’s how to correctly pronounce it: Cah-preh-zeh.

INGREDIENTS FOR CAPRESE SKEWERS

Ingredients you’ll need for this recipe:

  • Cherry or grape tomatoes
  • Mini mozzarella balls
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Toothpicks or mini skewers

To assemble, start by adding the cherry tomato and pushing to the top of the skewer. Next, fold the basil leaf in half and poke through to meet up with the tomato and follow with the mozzarella ball. When ready to serve, lightly drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Arrange the skewers on a serving platter with extra balsamic and enjoy!

Tips and Tricks

  • If you want to really get your flavors going, grill or sauté your tomatoes before adding them to the skewer.
  • Add prosciutto, kalamata olives, roasted garlic, or colored cherry tomatoes.
  • Save yourself some stress and make these skewers ahead of time to be served later. Be sure to hold the balsamic until right before they are served, otherwise the mozzarella will take on a brown color.

Cuisine Mediterranean
Servings 20

Ingredients

  • 20 Cherry or grape tomatoes
  • 20 Mini mozzarella balls
  • 20 Fresh basil leaves
  • 1 1/2 cup Balsamic vinegar reduction

Instructions

  • Stab a cherry tomato with a toothpick and slide to the top.
  • Take a basil leaf and fold in half or thirds depending on how large. Slide up the toothpick below the tomato.
  • Finish off the toothpick skewer with a mozzarella ball (if serving upright, don't poke the whole way through so the skewer balances on the mozz ball – otherwise the toothpick will cause it to fall over).
  • If serving immediately, drizzle with balsamic reduction. If serving over 30+ minutes, store skewers in fridge in airtight container and balsamic reduction in separate container. Wait to drizzle with balsamic until right before serving, otherwise the mozz balls will take on a brownish color.
  • Pour remaining balsamic reduction in a small bowl when serving for guests who want a drizzle more!
